Family Impact – Third Ward
Family Impact-Third Ward was a church-wide effort to shine the light of Jesus Christ in Houston’s Third Ward during Spring Break 2012. This safe, family-friendly, high impact event brought beauty and relationship in a place that is scarred by the absence of the Gospel. Over 500 people from our church participated in this two-day spring break event. Many parents took Friday off from work and brought the entire family.
The projects of restoring beauty and relationship were coordinated by Sugar Creek’s partner GenerationOne. The projects were designed so any age and any skill level can participate. The church provided all materials and resources, food, water, and more. The staging point each day started at the LYF Center and volunteers took buses to and from the Third Ward. The types of projects included restoration of sub- standard housing, cleaning of debris, some light construction, children’s games and activities, all designed to be highly relational with the community.
From Don Waybright, Pastor of Love and Lead…
Praise God!! I want to thank everybody on behalf of Generation One, Blackshear Elementary, and the 3rd Ward for an excellent and incredible week. Last week approximately 1600 volunteers represented the light of Christ in the 3rd Ward. The gates of hell were shaken and much territory was taken back for the Kingdom! Last week was one of two weeks we have experienced where the darkness was pushed back by the shear force of the light the saints brought into the community. The Kingdom impact of last week cannot be put into words. I have heard countless testimonies from volunteers and people in the community about salvation’s, answered prayer, and most importantly many people coming to an understanding of the call God has put on their life. I know that many of the volunteers got a revelation of what it looks like to walk out the word of God and many residents got a revelation of the love of God and that seeds of hope were planted.
Thank you and God Bless y’all for making such a big Kingdom impact, the devil is still trying to figure out where the freight train that ran over him last week came from…Mike Malkemes, Generation One
